Thanks go to Doug Piercey who organized the club social on the weekend that saw 16 of us entertained by a Toronto Marlies hockey game (but not by the 6-3 loss) and later at a small pub, Brazenhead, for dinner. He also organized a number of draw prizes for those who arrived early.   Food at the pub was excellent if you’re ever looking for a good pub in the up and coming area called Liberty Village. It was good, also, to have there a couple of spouses we haven’t seen much of, Nancy Piercey and Bev Mannering. Overall a great night out with friends.  Nice work Doug!

      Editor Musings
In early November last year I headed to Virginia with friends for a golf week but we broke up our trip there with a stay overnight in Punxatawney PA where “Punxatawney Phil”, the groundhog, is famous for February weather predictions (like our Wireton Willy). We even stayed at the hotel made famous in the movie “Groundhog Day” starring Bill Murray.  The hotel is a massive old structure with a patchwork of renovations over its 80-year history. The rooms were spartan but comfortable. The reason we even made this side trip was that one of our foursome found out that there was going to be a big Halloween parade in town the night we’d be there so we thought it would be fun. We even considered dressing up for it as hockey players or Shania Twain and walking in the parade.

After checking in we discovered that the parade was the night before (nice planning J) so we asked about restaurants, figuring a town with such notoriety would have many. The hotel clerk told us about a sort of family restaurant about 3 blocks away that was good. We said thanks and that we’d walk but he said “Oh no, it’s much too far to walk, you should drive.”  We walked and talked about why so many in America are overweight - they all drive to restaurants.  We arrived in a half-full diner-type place with waitresses in uniform and were led to a corner table. Everyone in the place was overweight.

We were told this was a good place to eat and you could tell because the featured dish that night was fish sticks and baked beans.
As we perused the menu four big, red-necked guys in camouflage came in and were seated about 5 tables away from us. We got this creepy ‘Deliverance’ sort of feeling amongst us and kept our eyes alert but not focused on these guys in case they thought we were giving them the eye, you know, that nudge nudge wink wink type of eye.

Somehow all four of us managed to turn down the ’special’ - but still dinner was not that good.  We managed to keep ourselves out of trouble and left in search of a good bar. Never found one but we did find 4 smoky, ratty dives that served cheap beer. So much for Punxatawney. Had we seen a groundhog while there and had it seen its shadow I’m sure it would have meant another 50 years of us never going back.  ~Michael B

New Handicap Rating Program for Runners

Specific Ontario running races designated as “Road Warrior” races offer a new category of prizing that ALL runners – slow, medium or fast - have a chance of winning.  How so?

Men and women with a ‘Road Warrior Handicap Rating’ at those races will run ‘virtually’ against each other.  The ‘handicap rating’, like a golf handicap, lets all compete as if on a level playing field.

Everyone with the ‘rating’ earns points at each ‘Road Warrior’ race and after each race and at year’s end, prizes go to those with the most points.  All Ontario runners qualify.

REGISTER FOR FREE on the Road Warrior site to receive a Road Warrior ID number.  Sign in and check the ratings to see if you’re already listed with a rating.  If you don’t have one, then run 3 running or trail races anywhere in the province and a ‘handicap rating’ can be created from your results at those races.

Enter any ‘Road Warrior-designated race (use your new ID number when you register for races so that YOU, and not someone with your same name & city, is awarded points correctly).   That rating is applied to your race time, then compared to everyone else’s to see who were the top finishers in the ‘Road Warrior’ category.

Everyone has a chance of winning that category.   Sign up as a Road Warrior then enter those races!RoadWarriorRunning.com

      Cold Enough?
The 16 of us who showed up last week all got hero biscuits for making it out in such cold weather.  This week should be a breeze by comparison.  A hint for traction… last week the salt dropped on the road made for slippery running but the sidewalks for the most part, even though snow-packed, offered better traction because they hadn’t been salted.  So watch for this when you run… the sidewalks may offer not only a better surface but a safer one.
PLEASE wear reflective outerwear or flashing lights for your own safety.
Tip for WINDchill conditions: apply light layer of Vaseline to exposed skin to protect it from frostbite.

      1. Merry Christmas & Happy Hanukah to all!
      2. “Jingle Bell Run“, Wednesday Dec. 17th… Club members, club alumni… come on out for a festive run!   Dress in Christmas garb, have lights, bells, reindeer…  We have a revised route for Short, Medium & Long so we can enjoy running past lots of Christmas lights - the route is on our club website (if it’s not on our site yet, please return there Tuesday) and will be posted at the centre. It’s the same routes we did for Halloween.
      3. Runner Safety… “Watching out for the other guy”… It’s been observed that as club members are running on Wednesdays in small groups and one runner from a group falls off the pace, that little to no attention is paid by the faster runners to the person who lags behind.  Why does it matter? Why is this being noted?  Because during winter weather one of our running friends who falls behind by themselves could slip on ice or snow and none of his or her running ‘friends’ would ever know unless they actually turned around to see if the person was still in sight and okay.  Gang, let’s not just assume that someone who falls off the pace is going to meet the next group behind because there often isn’t a ‘next’ group or they may be way behind. Lots of club runners push themselves on Wednesdays to keep up with a group and are proud of it but may not be able to keep that pace for the whole run, and thus fall back. All we’re saying is that for the sake of safety and camaraderie, please turn around to see that the slower runners are okay, especially when weather or footing is rough.
      4. More Safety… We haven’t hit bad windchill conditions yet but here’s a good tip if running with others in minus windchill conditions… every 15 minutes or so, check each other’s exposed skin (usually the face!) to ensure no white spots are forming which would indicate frostbite is setting in.  It’s a simple thing to do but can be a huge help to anyone who is stricken. IF someone with you is frostbitten, get them to stop running or get into shelter, remove their glove and press their warm hand onto the frostbitten area. It should clear up quickly but any further running will require vigilant checking.
      5. No official club runs on Dec. 24 or Dec. 31 as the centre will be closed anyway. Next official club run is Jan. 7.
      6. Newsletters continue in the happy New Year.

      Club Notes
      1. Michael B has a pair of men’s black loafer shoes that someone left at the Christmas party.  Maybe size 9 or 10. Email him to bring them Wed. night otherwise they stay in his cold garage.
      2. Someone left a pair of black running gloves in the main foyer of the community centre after a run two weeks ago. They’re in the club maps case upstairs. See Stephen Wallace at the next run.
      3. SAFETY FIRST… Some people are still ‘invisible’ when running at night because they don’t have flashing lights or reflective material on their outer layer. Please add lights or reflective bands so you’ll be seen.
      4. Safety & Etiquette… when we’re running down a street, can you please all move to the left side of the street facing traffic like the bulk of club members do? This makes it safer for runners AND drivers who then don’t have to ‘thread the needle’ to drive between runners on both sides.
      5. “Jingle Bell Run”, Wednesday Dec. 17th… dress in Christmas garb, have lights, bells, reindeer… The neighbors will surely hear us coming to check out their house decorations that night.
      6. No official club runs on Dec. 24 or Dec. 31 as the centre will be closed anyway. Next official club run is Jan. 7.

      What Do You Reflect?
Reports from a few club members state that many of you veteran runners are STILL not wearing reflective materials when out on club runs.  If your club jacket has reflective piping and you don’t wear the jacket because it’s not cool enough, you’re invisible to drivers. Wear reflective bands, flashing lights or a safety vest if your long sleeve tops don’t reflect. Black shorts + black top = invisible.  Play safe out there, eh?

      What’s He Doing Now?
While most of you know one of the running club co-founders, Michael Brennan, some of you don’t know his co-founder, Paul Vacirca.  Paul has worked in the Whistler BC area for about 7 years and in that time took up the hobby of stone carving. He made elaborate carvings for gifts at his wedding and since then has sold his beautiful works to gallery stores in Whistler and Victoria. He continues to ‘polish’ his skill and ‘carve’ a niche out for himself!  Visit his elegant website .  Oh yeah, he still runs but mostly from the bears that frequent his subdivision of Pemberton.

A rebuttal for Rob Gonsalves (from Bob Glazier)
      Coconuts v. Beer

I am sure Rob’s analysis of the benefits of coconut water are correct. However he omitted to mention the following.

      1. A coconut can give you a nasty bang on the head when it falls off the tree - beer bottles DO NOT grow on trees and therefore are not dangerous.
      2. Beer contains alcohol which is essential to stay sane.
      3. Coconuts are really hard to open - to be able to drink beer, all you need is a bottle opener.
      4. Coconut shells cannot be recycled.
      5. Can you really see Doug Piercey, Steve Jones, Andy Watson, Dan Little and Peter Kain enjoying coconut juice at Scruffy Murphy’s after the Wednesday night run?

      No More Complaining
I thought people might be interested in this extract from a recent email I received from my friend back in Harare. Her description of the prize reminded me of my Granddad’s tales of post war rations. Cheryl’s final sentence hit me hard - this from a relatively well paid school secretary with two young sons. And to think that all we have to fret about is the color of the run shirt. Thank you Canada!             ~ Sheila Jacobs

      USA 10 Miler, Oct. 13

Hi gang - hope all is well in Snowy Toronto!  I am working way too much down here in Houston but did manage to run the USA 10 Miler - Alliance Space Center Run on October 13th.  Here is a photo and my run time.   The run started from the University of Houston at Clear Lake and circled the NASA Space Center.  The great thing about this part of the country is it is very flat, not a hill to be found but unfortunately the humidity is a killer.  The race was on a very hot humid and still day, I was drenched with sweat along with everyone else as soon as we started running.  I did get a few comments from people if I was actually from Toronto and if it was snowing back home or not.  It was great to get out and do a run while I was here.

Hope everyone is doing well in Toronto - I should be back around Christmas time and will be back out to run with the group then. - Joanne Agnew
